How Gold Jewellery Is Priced in Dubai: Daily Rate, Making Charges and VAT
When you buy a gold piece in Dubai, its price has three parts. Understanding them makes it easy to compare shops.
1. Gold value
Weight in grams × today's gram rate for that karat. The gram rate follows the global ounce price and the dollar-pegged dirham.
2. Making charge
The cost of crafting the piece, usually quoted per gram. It varies by design and shop, and it is the part you can negotiate.
3. VAT
Jewellery in the UAE carries 5% VAT. Investment gold, such as bars and coins of 99% purity or more, is zero-rated under specific conditions.
Worked example
A 22K piece weighing 10 grams, with a gram rate of AED 400 and a making charge of AED 20 per gram:
- Gold value = AED 4,000
- Making charge = AED 200
- VAT 5% = AED 210
- Total = AED 4,410
These figures are only an illustration. Use the price estimator to calculate with today's rate.
